Across Brazil, the foundations for climate-resilient urban living already exist — from nature-based infrastructure to community-led innovation. What’s missing is collaboration infrastructure powered by connection that can turn promising pilots into systems. This BMW Foundation publication explores how collaboration can unlock scale, accelerate adaptation, and shape cities that are livable for all.

The InitiativeCollaborative Action Platform Brazil
The Collaborative Action Platform Brazil is reimagining cities as innovative, sustainable, and resilient places ready to face the climate crisis. Focused on urban areas most vulnerable to climate risks, the Platform supports local leaders and organizations by fostering collaboration, aligning resources, and scaling nature-based and climate adaptation solutions. We launched the Collaborative Action Platform in Brazil in response to growing urban challenges—from rapid urbanization and inadequate infrastructure to deep-rooted social inequality. Through integrated approaches like better urban planning, resilient infrastructure, and nature-based strategies, the Platform helps cities adapt to climate change and deliver tangible benefits to their communities.
Over the past two years, the Expert Rounds have generated valuable knowledge across a range of solutions. This has been captured in three insight reports that identify patterns, test approaches, and translate lessons into practical tools that can be applied beyond a single project or region. At the core, the Expert Rounds focus on what it takes for solutions to scale. Over time, this shifts the dynamic: instead of isolated efforts, a shared process begins to emerge, linking local practice with finance, policy, and visibility.

The BMW Foundation’s Future Urban Living challenge workstream aims to move beyond building “bigger and smarter” toward cities that promote social cohesion, resilience, adaptability, and connection. This includes recognizing how urban well-being is shaped by the communities, economies, and ecosystems around them. Future-ready development must focus not only on smart growth, but also on resilient systems that reflect diverse local realities. The Collaborative Action Platform Brazil is one of the initiatives in this workstream.
